CARDIONCOLOGY.ORG ABSTRACT:
This study assesses a Risk Assessment Model for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in cancer patients treated in the ambulatory outpatient setting.
The rationale for the study was based on the recent shift to the ambulatory setting for the treatment of cancer without routine prophylactic measures being taken to avoid VTE in these cancer patients.
The results indicate that in the ambulatory setting 56.3% of cancer patients developed VTE in the ambulatory settings despite the fact that most were not on chemotherapy.
The data point to a need to create new models that take into consideration this patient population.
