CARDIONCOLOGY.ORG ABSTRACT:
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a global health impact; however, patients with pre-existing cardiovascular often have disproportionately worse outcomes.
The potential for a poor outcome may be related to a persistent immune activation that leads to uncontrolled cytokine production that can result in multi-organ failure and death.
The release of troponin and natriuretic peptide also rise when the cardiovascular system is implicated. Furthermore, inflammation in the vascular system can lead to microangiopathy with thrombosis, and inflammation of the myocardium can lead to myocarditis, heart failure, arrhythmias and even sudden death.
